Getting started
What is Steady?
Steady is a sobriety and habit tracker for iOS and Android. It runs a live clock from the day you started, lets you check in daily, and tracks how much money you've saved along the way — all without an account, ads, or a social feed.
Do I need to create an account?
No. Steady has no sign-up and no login. Open the app, tell it what you're staying steady from, and your clock starts immediately.
How do I start tracking something?
On first launch, type in what you're tracking (alcohol, nicotine, or any habit) and, optionally, a daily cost. Tap "Start my clock" and Steady begins counting from that moment.
Can I track more than one habit?
Tracking a single habit is free. Tracking multiple habits at once is part of the one-time Premium unlock — tap "Habits" on the home screen to add more once you've purchased it.
Clock & check-ins
How does the sobriety clock work?
It's a live counter — days, hours, minutes, seconds — measured from the start date and time of your habit. It updates every second while the app is open.
What does a daily check-in actually do?
Tapping "Check in" marks today as clean in your history. It's a one-tap way to log the day — it doesn't affect your clock by itself, and you can only check in once per day.
What happens if I forget to check in one day?
Nothing bad. Your clock keeps running as long as you haven't logged a relapse — a missed check-in just leaves that day blank in your history, it doesn't reset anything.
I slipped. How do I log it, and what happens to my clock?
On the home screen, tap "Relapsed? Reset the clock" underneath the check-in button. Confirm, and Steady logs today as a relapse and restarts your clock from that moment. Your past history isn't erased — you can still see every previous day, including your resets, on the habit's history screen.
Where can I see my full history?
Open a habit's history screen to see a calendar of every day you've logged, marked clean or as a reset, plus a running count of how many resets you've had.
Money saved
How is "money saved" calculated?
It's the daily cost you set when you started, multiplied by the exact time that's elapsed on your clock. It updates continuously, the same way the clock does.
Can I change or add the daily cost after I've started?
Yes — open the habit, tap edit, and update the daily cost. The money-saved total recalculates from your original start date using the new figure.
I didn't set a daily cost — can I still see this?
The counter is optional. If you leave the daily cost blank (or zero) when you start, Steady simply won't show a savings figure until you add one.
Notifications & reminders
What notifications does Steady send?
Milestone notifications at 7, 14, 30, 60, 90, 180, and 365 days on your current streak, plus an optional daily reminder to check in. You can turn either on or off in Settings → Notifications.
Do these notifications require an internet connection?
No. They're scheduled entirely on your device using your phone's local notification system — there's no push server involved, which is consistent with Steady not running any servers at all.
I'm not getting notifications — what should I check?
First, make sure notifications are enabled inside Steady (Settings → Notifications). If they're on there but you still don't see them, check your phone's system settings — Steady needs OS-level notification permission, which iOS and Android both require you to grant separately.
If I reset my clock, do milestone notifications reset too?
Yes. Milestones are tied to your current streak, so logging a relapse reschedules the 7/14/30/60/90/180/365-day notifications from your new start time.
Privacy & your data
Does Steady collect or see my data?
No. Steady doesn't have a server, an account system, or a database with your name on it. Everything you enter — habits, check-ins, notes — lives only on your device by default. There's nothing for us to collect, and nothing to sell.
Is what I'm tracking visible to anyone else?
No. There's no social feed, no sharing, and no way for anyone else to see your habits or history unless you personally hand them your phone or an exported file.
What happens to my data if I delete the app?
Since your data lives only on your device, uninstalling Steady deletes it permanently — unless you've turned on cloud backup or exported a copy first. See "Backup & restore" below before you uninstall or switch phones.
Backup & restore
How does cloud backup work?
Cloud backup is a Premium feature. When it's on, Steady encrypts your data on your device, then stores that encrypted copy in your own iCloud (iOS) or Google Drive (Android) — a space that belongs to you, which we have no access to and no way to read.
I got a new phone. How do I get my data back?
If cloud backup was turned on for your habit, install Steady on the new device and sign in to the same iCloud or Google account — Steady will find and restore your encrypted backup. Without backup enabled, data doesn't transfer between devices, since it's never stored anywhere but the original phone.
Is backup required?
No, it's entirely optional and off by default. Steady works fully on-device without it — backup exists for people who want a safety net against losing or replacing their phone.
Export & delete your data
Can I get a copy of everything I've logged?
Yes. Go to Settings → Privacy → "Export my data" to save a plain-text copy of everything you've tracked — no cloud backup required, and nothing leaves your device except the file you choose to save or share.
How do I permanently delete my data?
Go to Settings → Privacy → "Delete all data." This permanently removes every habit and check-in on the device and cannot be undone, so export a copy first if you might want it later.
Troubleshooting
My clock looks wrong after changing time zones.
The clock is based on your device's clock, so travelling across time zones can shift the displayed elapsed time by the same offset. The underlying start date doesn't change, and the display corrects itself once your device settles on the new local time.
The app won't open, or a screen looks broken.
Try closing and reopening the app first, then check the App Store or Google Play for a pending update. Avoid uninstalling to "fix" it if you haven't backed up or exported your data, since uninstalling erases it.
